The Illinois State Board of Education is proud to be a partner in the Illinois Bicentennial Celebration. The year-long series of programs and events commenced on December 3, 2017 and will culminate with Illinois’ 200th birthday on December 3, 2018. This site highlights the Educator resources that are available in conjunction with the Bicentennial.
Below is information about two companion resources created for educators to use in the classroom to commemorate the Illinois Bicentennial. The Illinois Chronicles and corresponding Educator's Guide provide ideas to support Bicentennial Education in the classroom.
ISBE continues to work with Illinois Bicentennial Commission and other stakeholder organizations to produce educational materials and resources to make the 200-year history of Illinois come alive in the classroom and at home for students, teachers, families and communities.
We are very excited to offer the Illinois Chronicles book as a foundational resource to teach and learn about Illinois history. The Illinois Chronicles is a unique book containing articles written as if the events just happened paired with a historical timeline package that will offer facts and suggested ideas for presentation of Illinois history in a chronological order.
Two Illinois Chronicles books will be provided to Illinois schools (FREE!) during the Spring of 2018. Additional Illinois Chronicles have been made available to purchase through the publisher of the Illinois Chronicles, What on Earth Publishing. Please see information at the bottom of the page to purchase additional copies.
The Illinois Chronicles Educator's Guide
In The Illinois Chronicles Educator's Guide you will find a wide range of activities, ideas, and suggestions on how to use The Illinois Chronicles in the classroom to enhance the teaching of State history for grades K–12.
Each of the eight idea topics include activities aimed at different grade levels. A possible correlation between the Illinois Learning Standards and the various activities included are listed within each idea topic. The specific standards addressed from an activity may change, depending upon the nuances you adapt to make the activity your own. The ideas and activities listed in this guide are intended to provide entry points to a deeper investigation that fully addresses Illinois Learning Standards.
We encourage you to think outside the box and use the eight idea topics as launching points for inspired activities within the classroom!
